On Monday, June 26th, students are asked to bring their swim suit and a towel for the afternoon. I will have a sprinkler set up at the school for our class to enjoy. Students will have the option to enjoy playing in the sprinkler or on the playground.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
You are invited to attend a school-wide "If You Know Squamish" exhibition on Thursday, June 1st in the gym from 3:03 to 7:00 pm to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday – Squamish Elementary style. Our class will have two displays at the event. One of our displays is a social studies and art unit about First Nations culture. As part of the display, we are learning how to create Quick Response (QR) codes. Students have written sentences about artistic designs used by local First Nations artists with descriptions of their cultural significance. Next, they made audio recordings of their writing and uploaded it to a QR code generator. A copy of the QR bar code will be on display in the school gym along with the salmon paintings. You will need a QR Code Reader to access the link to the recordings. The bar codes can be read by any QR Code reader app and there are many free apps available for Apple and Android phones and tablets. Our class has also been working hard to finish our Spirit Animal research projects in science. Students have worked in collaboration with a partner to read about, take notes on, and write a report about one of the four Spirit Animals - wolf, bear, eagle and salmon. As part of our class exhibit on June 1st, students will have their Animal Dioramas on display to show an application of their learning. I am looking forward to seeing many parents and guardians at the exhibition. I will be at the school until 4:30 on Thursday and will have an iPad with a QR Code reader with me for your use during the exhibition. If you would like further information about the dioramas or QR Codes please email me with your questions. Enjoy, Mrs. Reed On Tuesday, April 18th our class participated in a school potlatch. A potlatch is a gift-giving feast common to some First Nations peoples living in the Northwest Coastal region of North America. Potlatchs are held to celebrate births, marriages and are part of a traditional naming ceremony. Students participated in the school ceremony as Greeters, Speakers, drummers and Gift Givers to Witnesses. After the opening ceremony, there was a potluck feast including many traditional foods from different cultures around the world. The potlatch ended with traditional songs and dancing. Thank you to all the parents who attended and to those who brought food to share at the feast. A special thank you to Deanna Lewis for organizing and leading the potlatch.
Our class has been learning about accessibility and inclusion in Social Studies. We have just finished our School Inspections to determine if our school is accessible for people with hearing, vision and physical disabilities. Our findings will be analyzed and we will present a report to Mrs. Mackenzie. We have learned a lot from the Rick Hansen Foundation program and recently had one of their Ambassadors, Teri Thorson, as a guest speaker. Mrs. Parker also spoke to us about her visual impairment and we had a teacher for the visually impaired as a guest speaker. In the next few weeks, we will also have a presentation from the teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The unit will culminate with a visit from Finnegan, a preschooler with vision, hearing and physical challenges. Dear Parents/Guardians: On Tuesday, our class will be celebrating Friendship Day. We will make cards for our classmates as well as our big and little buddies to show how much we appreciate buddy reading with them. Students will create bags to hold the cards they get from their friends. Some students have asked if they can bring Valentine's day cards to school and although it is not necessary, they are welcome. If you have any further questions, please email me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks you, Mrs. Reed Dear Parent/Guardian:
I have had a few parents request additional information about tomorrow night's concert - time, proper dress, etc, so I wanted to update you with the latest information. The concert starts tomorrow, Tuesday, December 13th at 6:00 sharp. Students are asked to arrive at 5:45 and to go directly to their classroom. The concert will last approximately 45 minutes and our class performance is near the end. The students will remain in the classroom when not on stage and can be picked up at the end. Their dress rehearsal was amazing and there is an extra special surprise they have been keeping a secret from parents. So, come expecting to be dazzled. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to email me directly. Thanks, Mrs. Reed Dear Parent/Guardian:
We will be starting our two week winter break on December 17th but students are encouraged to continue learning at home. Please support your child in becoming a proficient reader by setting aside time each day for reading. I am also providing the link to a website for those students who want to start researching a topic during the break for their next Create & Innovate project. Starting in January, students will be working with partners to research, design and create a project. The website is: http://www.instructables.com/ I also want to let parents know that students will be leaving their Communication Folders at school over the break so that I can mend or replace them as needed. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a safe, happy holiday season. Best wishes, Mrs. Reed Hello Parents & Guardians,
We are very excited about our upcoming skating field trips to Brennan Park. Here are some details about our trip. On Nov. 15th and Dec. 6th, the bus will leave the school promptly at 1:15 and return at 2:45. We will be skating from 1:30 to 2:30. We will be eating lunch at school as usual. Please dress your child in appropriate clothing (snow pants or thermal underwear, long thick socks, long sleeve shirt, etc) for skating and LABEL their hat, gloves, etc. with their name. This is a special time for your child and we are asking parents to make childcare arrangements for younger children should you wish to attend. Thank you in advance for helping to make this a special day for all the students. Sincerely, Mrs. Reed Dear Parents,
Halloween week has arrived and there is excitement in the air. If your child is planning on wearing a costume for the parade, please send it along with them in a bag so they can put it on at school. I do not recommended that they wear costumes to the school as it may become damaged throughout the day. On Monday, our class will be participating in the costume parade at 9:30 in the gym. After recess, we will continue with regular academic programs and have a few holiday related activities but there will be no class party on Halloween. Please continue to support your child with making healthy food choices this week and remind them that candy should remain at home. Thank you for your support, Mrs. Reed Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to an exciting new school year. My name is Mrs. Sue Reed. I am passionate about creating a classroom climate for your child that fosters the development of creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. Currently, there are 24 students in our class with half in grade 2 and half in grade 3. We have 14 boys and 10 girls altogether. Although there is a shift to web-based home-school communication, I have found that many students benefit from learning to use a paper agenda. This is especially true in second grade as it is a time of blossoming independence. Please look for your child's communication folder daily. It will contain such things as a calendar agenda, school messages, forms, homework and a reading log. A good way to support your child is to establish a routine of checking it when they arrive home then putting it right back into their pack to ensure that it gets returned the following day. Thank you for supporting your child as they become a more independent learner. I have also created a website as a secondary form of home-school communication. Please visit the website for information on homework, dates of events, needed supplies (ex. toilet paper rolls), etc. I will endeavor to keep the calendar as accurate as possible but please refer to the SQE school website for the most up-to-date information. I can also be contacted via email or at the school should you wish to have a more private conversation. If you are interested in helping out in class, please fill out and return the attached parent helper sheet. We will need your assistance throughout the school year. Your support makes all the difference, and we are grateful. Please find attached a list of supplies your child will need. At times during the year, we will request other supplies for activities in the classroom. Notices will be sent in advance when we need those items. I look forward to meeting you personally and am thrilled to be teaching your child this year. Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions. Sincerely, Mrs. Reed |
